Travel with Ease

In 2008, Anne Hathaway, an Oscar® nominee for Best Actress in Rachel Getting Married, stars in Passengers as Claire Summers, a young psychologist assisting survivors of a plane crash. As she helps them through their grief, Claire realizes that their accounts of the accident are conflicting. Initially attributing this to trauma, she becomes suspicious when survivors begin to mysteriously disappear one by one. Eric, a passenger she has grown close to, may hold the key to unraveling the truth behind the tragic incident in this gripping psychological thriller.

Directed by Rodrigo Garcia, Passengers features an impressive cast led by Hathaway and Patrick Wilson. As a novice therapist trying to unravel the mystery of the survivors' disappearance, Hathaway's performance is captivating. Wilson, who plays a survivor with a newfound zest for life and a growing affection for Hathaway, adds depth to the story.

Despite the charismatic leads, the script fails to fully utilize their talents. Garcia attempts to infuse the film with his signature multi-layered storytelling, reminiscent of his previous work in arthouse dramas, but the material falls short. The supporting cast, including Andre Braugher, Dianne Wiest, Clea Duvall, David Morse, and William B. Davis, is also underutilized, leaving them stranded in a sea of red herrings and false leads.

Passengers is a supernatural-tinged thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, but ultimately falls short of its potential. Hathaway's performance shines in a film that struggles to deliver on its promising premise.
